July 2022

Recap:

2nd Annual Woodfords Community Garden Tour a Wild Success!

On June 11, Woodfords Corner welcomed over 300 garden enthusiasts from near and far to our 2022 Community Garden Tour. Attendees walked and biked to tour 12 special gardens in the Woodfords area, generously opened to the public by neighborhood gardeners.

The event benefitted Friends of Woodfords Corner (once again serving as our largest annual fundraising event), and A Company of Girls, one of our cherished local nonprofit organizations whose mission is to strengthen and empower girls and their families and foster community through the arts.

Thank you to everyone who helped make the 2nd Annual Woodfords Community Garden Tour a success, particularly our 12 gardener households who got their gardens ready in order to share their spaces, our very generous sponsors Bangor Savings Bank and Benchmark Real Estate without whom this event wouldn’t have been possible, and to all of the people who came out to enjoy the day!

WBRC Moves to Woodfords Corner

WBRC Inc., Woodfords Corner’s newest business, is settling in at the former Rite Aid building, on the corner of Ocean and Forest Avenues. WBRC is an architecture and engineering firm in its 120th year. They are known locally for projects such as Ocean Avenue Elementary School, Aura, Cross Insurance Arena, and South Portland Middle School.
WBRC’s Portland team of 20 professionals (out of 60 company-wide) includes architects, engineers, interior designers, and a landscape architect. Watch for their open house later this summer.

Local Artist Adds to the Street Art on Deering Ave

Artist Rachel Nimon is spreading her unique murals from the inside of Bird & Co to the outdoor seating. Who knew that concrete barriers could be so beautiful? And Rachel has joined our FWC team of creatives and active transportation enthusiasts to help us create temporary crosswalk murals, too! Thanks, Rachel, for all you do to enliven the Corner!

Proper Cup has Reopened!

After almost two months of renovating, The Proper Cup is back and better than ever! Be sure to pay them a visit, sip on a coffee, and sit in their beautiful new pink loveseat.

Open Monday - Friday 7 am - 1 pm, Saturday & Sunday 7 am - 3 pm.

Question of the Month: tell us what you think!

We're taking a break from Question of the Month for July—we'll be back in August!

In June we asked for your opinion on what would be a good fit in the other half of the Rite Aid (WBRC) building. The 57 respondent leaned heavily towards a small grocery store & a microbrewery! We sent this data to Boulos who will keep this in mind when finding a tenant!

Help Outfit the New FWC HQ!

We are delighted to announce that FWC will be moving into real, official office space this month! Thanks to the generosity of our supporters, our small but mighty organization is reaching an important milestone in our nonprofit evolution: we'll now have a central hub for our board and team meetings, merchant gatherings, event prep, storage of all our materials, and more. (It's kind of like moving out of our parents' house, and blossoming into adulthood – a big deal for us!)

As we take this big step, we are looking for support from our community to help equip our office. Check out our office furniture and infrastructure needs here, and let us know if you'd like to donate. Questions? Email us at info@woodfordscorner.org.

Once we get settled, we'll welcome all of you to an open house event later this year – keep an eye out for that invitation in the coming months!

Beautifying the Corner with Crosswalk Murals

Our Active Transportation Team has been hard at work this spring with new projects. Some of you may recall a handful of elusive Instagram Polls back in April—the results from those were used in designing four crosswalk murals on Deering Avenue. Our designs were officially accepted by the Public Art Committee on Friday, June 17th, which means installation will happen in the very near future (if you're interested in volunteering, click here)! Read more & see the designs >>>

Thank you to our new Volunteers!

Thank you Brendan and Heidi for joining our Water Crew for the Deering Ave Planters!

If you would like to pitch in and help water the planters email volunteer@woodfordscorner.org with the subject "Joining the Planter Watering Team".
